Other numerous products also characterize this territory: the lamb farmer of the Quercy, the milk calf, the saffron of Quercy, the melon of Quercy are so many specialities which make the gastronomic wealth of this territory.
Except markets, you can find these products of countries at the producers.
Lot of Saveurs, is a Show of the Remarkable Sites of the Taste from the Lot to Cahors (in June 30th on July 2nd, 2017).
This show gives to taste and to see the gastronomy in all its art by putting in the honour the local sectors and the heads who value them in a friendly atmosphere. Artists of the cooking treat our papillae with the certified products of the Lot whereas artists, writers, culinary designers, photographers show that the cooking can be a wonderful source of inspiration for their art. Every year, a product lotois is for the honour: after the lamb, the pork fed in the grain, the fat duck of the Southwest, the melon, it is the Rocamadour AOC which was for the honour in 2016.
The festival-fans, the adults and the children (they were about 8 000 in 2015), feast on cooking course, on workshops beside the Head of the "Good Tables of the Lot" and the prestigious guests (Thierry Marx, Agnès Jaoui, Bernard Vaussion, Jean-Luc Petitrenaud, Michel Sarran and Luce's free concert...), of sensational meals as the Large Table of 2 000 people or still sublime Meal of the Heads.
The Lot Of Saveurs, which received in 2014, the label UNESCO "gastronomic Meal of the French people", inhales the air time and defends its cultural and gastronomic exception.
It is the festival which has feet on its territory and the spirit on the alert: every year, a theme lands, always and especially in a friendly way, the current problems of the gastronomy: the junk food, the street-food, the promotion of local in the face of the globalization of the tastes, the fight against the food wasting.
A gourmand hike is organized by the Tourist Office. The purpose being to make discover local products and local heritage.Phone : : 05 65 31 50 08 / 05 65 24 34 28
The wine of Cahors ... so noble, so black
You will find all the story of the wine of Cahors on this site. But we do not resist this small anecdote:
The conquests of the Roman Empire brought grape vines to the Quercy region over 2,000 years ago. The resulting wines rapidly became so good as to damage Italian wine production. In 92 A.D., the emperor ordered the Cahors vines pulled up, but he was not obeyed… Yes!:D
Situated between the 44th and 45th parallels, the vineyards of Cahors are equidistant from the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees. They extend from both of the banks of the Lot River in a swathe about 60 km long and 30 km wide, at an altitude between 100 and 300 meters. Between Cahors and Puy l’Evêque, the Lot River flows from east to west, meandering in a narrow plain of alluvial deposits, and eroding the chalky soil of the Causses.
The climate of the Cahors region is Atlantic in style, but subject to the influences of the Mediterranean, thereby resulting in less rainfall here than in Bordeaux. In autumn, the hot and dry southerly Autan wind blows until the end of harvest time. At the bottom of the valley, at an altitude of 90 meters, the river meanders, regulating the temperature and offering a permanent supply of water. This is typical of many areas producing great wines.
The Malbec, a very French grape variety. The main grape variety used to produce Cahors wine is Malbec. Anecdotally, this variety has ensured the success of Argentinian wines, and yet it's definitely French!!!
Why use a variety with such strong character? Perhaps because it makes the wine powerful and gives it a black colour ; it's often called "Black Wine".
If Cahors hold the top of the poster, they are not nevertheless the only ones to treat palaces. It is indeed necessary to count on wines of the Hillsides of Quercy and Wines of the Coast of the Lot.
You will find several delegates of wines of the region. But here are those that we had the opportunity to discover during our escapades:
