"Les plus beaux villages de France" in the Lot
Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is perched on a cliff overlooking a meander of the Lot and is a masterpiece of medieval architecture. Surveyed by the fortified church, the houses with their sloping, brown-tiled roofs are a harmonious sight lining the picturesque alleyways. This spot has attracted both artists and writers such as André Breton who used to take up residence in the village in summer. The sacred city clings to the cliff in a superposition of houses and chapels. From the castle which crowns this audacious construction, a sheer drop of some 150m emerges, at the bottom of which the Alzou stream meanders. On the way to St-Jacques-de-Compostelle, the St-Sauveur basilica and the St-Amadour crypt, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, are available to visitors once they have climbed the 216 steps of the pilgrims' staircase . The miraculous chapel houses the Black Virgin.
On the borders of Quercy and Limousin, between Collonges-la-Rouge and Rocamadour, Martel has retained a rich heritage and the dynamism of a merchant city focused on local products from medieval times.
